Nord Quantique Secures $10 Million DARPA Stage B Extension For Quantum Computing

Nord Quantique has secured a $10 million extension to its Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Stage B agreement, providing additional funding to evaluate the company’s approach to fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The Canadian quantum computing company is developing an architecture that aims to reduce the physical hardware needed to build reliable, error-corrected quantum systems.

The funding supports Nord Quantique’s continued participation in Stage B of DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, or QBI.

The DARPA program assesses whether emerging quantum computing architectures can achieve utility-scale operation by 2033. The initiative evaluates the technical feasibility, scalability, and resource requirements of different approaches to commercially valuable quantum computing.

Nord Quantique uses bosonic quantum error correction to protect quantum information within individual physical qubits.

The company said this design can substantially reduce the hardware overhead traditionally associated with fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Its architecture embeds quantum error correction directly into each qubit using superconducting bosonic codes and is designed to achieve a 1:1 ratio between logical and physical qubits.

Nord Quantique believes this approach can enable more compact quantum systems with faster clock rates and a lower energy and physical footprint compared with architectures requiring large numbers of physical qubits for each logical qubit.

The additional DARPA funding will support the company’s development roadmap as it continues working toward scalable, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

Nord Quantique is positioning the architecture for eventual commercial use and integration with existing computing infrastructure.

The Stage B extension also gives DARPA additional opportunity to evaluate whether the company’s hardware-efficient approach can meet the demanding technical requirements necessary for practical utility-scale quantum computing.
